Susan Abigail Sarandon is a reputed American actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. A veteran actress known for her impeccable style of acting, Sarandon has been felicitated with both, Academy and BAFTA Awards and is renowned for her work both on and off the screen. Due to her contributions towards social causes, Sarandon was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in the year 1999 and in 2006, she was honoured with the Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award.

Sarandon’s body of work includes her features on the silver screen, television as well as Broadway. Early Life and Education

Born as Susan Abigail Tomalin on 4th October 1946 in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City to Lenora Marie and Phillip Leslie Tomalin, She is the eldest among her 9 siblings and has four brothers and four sisters. She is of English, Irish and Welsh ancestry on her father’s side and Italian ancestry on her mother’s side.

Sarandon was raised as a Roman Catholic, which meant she attended only Roman Catholic schools. She was raised in Edison, New Jersey and graduated in 1964 from Edison High School. From 1964-1968, Sarandon attended The Catholic University of America from where she graduated with a BA in drama.

Career Rise

Although Sarandon debuted in 1970, and gave many critically acclaimed performances, she did not become a household name until 1988, when she got her break through role opposite actors Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins in Bull Durham, which was declared a huge critical and commercial success. In the 1990’s alone, Sarandon received as many as 4 Academy award nominations for best actress for her work in films like  ‘Thelma & Louise’ in 1991, ‘Lorenzo’s Oil’ in 1992,  ‘The Client’ in 1994, until she finally won her first Academy award for ‘Dead Man Walking’ in 1995. Sarandon has also received 8 Golden Globe nominations for movies like ‘White Palace’ in 1990, ‘Stepmom’ in 1998, ‘Igby Goes Down’ in 2002, and Bernard and Doris in 2007. Her other commercially successful movies include  ‘Little Women’ in 1994, ‘Anywhere but Here’ in 1999, The Banger Sisters’ in 2002, ‘Shall We Dance’ in 2004, ‘Elizabethtown’ in 2005, and ‘Enchanted’ in 2007.

Sarandon has also made a number of guest appearances on television and received 5 Emmy award nominations for her work on shows like ‘Friends’ in 2001, ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ in 2002, and T.V. movies ‘Bernard and Dorris’ in 2007 and ‘You Don’t know Jack’ in 2010. She received rave reviews for her portrayal of actress Bette Davis in the 2017 FX anthology series ‘Feud’ which chronicled the real-life tensions between Davis and actress Joan Crawford portrayed by Jessica Lange.

Sarandon met her husband Chris Sarandon while they were both in college. She married him on 16 September 1967. Although they divorced in the year 1979, Sarandon decided to retain his surname as her stage name.

Post her divorce, she was said to be in a relationship with director Louis Malle as well as musician David Bowie. Sarandon dated Franco Amurri, an Italian filmmaker, in the mid 1980’s and had a daughter named Emma Amurri with him. While filming the movie ‘Bull Durham’, she met actor Tim Robbins and entered into a relationship with him. Together, Robbins and Sarandon have two sons, but the couple split in 2009. She later was involved with Jonathan Bricklin with whom she split up in 2015.

The 1.7 meter tall Sarandon admitted that she was on Tinder, in 2016, but also stated she had no fixed interest in a particular gender. In February 2017, Susan Sarandon stated that she was bisexual. l
