Diaz was born on 30 August 1972 in San Diego, California to Billie Early and Emilio (Queso) Diaz. While her mother was an import/export agent, her father worked as a foreman for Unocal, an oil company in California. She has only one sibling, an older sister named Chimene. Diaz has Spanish and Cuban ancestry on her father’s side, while her mother has English, German, Scots-Irish and Cherokee ancestry.

Diaz was raised in the city of Long Beach, California where she attended the Los Cerritos Elementary School. She was also a student at the Long Beach Polytechnic High School. Diaz started her career, with modelling at the age of sixteen.

Diaz shot to fame with ‘The Mask’ in 1994, a movie she auditioned for despite having no acting experience, but was applauded for her performance and established as a sex symbol. The movie also earned her, her first Golden Globe nomination.

Diaz was cast in the 1997 movie ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ alongside Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney for which she won an ALMA award. Diaz’s personal life has often garnered a lot of attention in the media. From 1991-1995, Diaz was in a live-in relationship with Carlos de La Torre, a video producer. She also dated Matt Dillon, her co-star on ‘There’s something about Mary’ from 1996 to 1998. In 1999, she entered into a relationship with actor Jared Leto but the couple split in 2003. Around this time, Diaz was involved with actor and singer Justin Timberlake. The relationship lasted until 2007. She was also linked to Alex Rodriguez, from the New York Yankees.

In December 2014, Diaz got engaged to musician Benji Madden and married him in January 2015 at her Beverly Hills Home. The couple was introduced by Nicole Richie who, along with Drew Barrymore served as her bridesmaids.
