O Yeong-su was born on October 19, 1944 in Japanese South Korea (now South Korea) to parents from a humble background. From a young age, Yeong-su was always interested in performing arts. His trademark infectious smile that people have been charmed by in Squid Game, was and is a permanent part of his personality.

Career Rise of Oh Yeong-su
O Yeong-su started acting professionally as a part of theatre troupe called ‘The Square’ in 1963. His performances made a mark, and he became a member of the National Theatre Company of Korea from 1987 to 2010. By 2013, this talented actor had acted in more than 200 plays and shows. Some of his O Yeong-su’s plays include adaptations of King Lear, The Merchant of Venice, A Street Car Named Desire, Requiem of a Nun, Goethe’s Faust, Death of a Salesman, Fathers and Sons, and A Confession for a Black Prostitute. O Yeong-su is noted for playing the role of ‘Prospero’; in the Shakespearean play ‘The Tempest;’.
On TV, Yeong-su played monks on screen many times in shows like Queen Seondeok, God of War, The Return of Iljimae and movies like A Little Monk. While it is commendable, one feels that the actor could have branched out to play other roles too. At age 77, the ever-smiling O Yeong-su finally found cult status as Oh Il-Nam in ‘Squid Game’.
Yeong-su is known to be extremely serious about his profession as an actor and doesn’t compromise at any point. A Korean fried chicken brand ‘Kkanbu Chicken’ offered him a part to endorse their product after the success of ‘Squid Game’ but the legendary actor denied it saying that he would rather concentrate full time on his work.
