Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York to Patricia Hickey and Alfred Roy Carey. While her father is of Afro-Venezuelan and African American descent, her mother is Irish. The family’s last name Carey was adopted by her grandfather when the immigrated to USA. She has an older sister named Alison and a brother named Morgan. Her parents divorced when she was three years old.

Carey attended Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York where she first tried her hand at song-writing and melodies. She graduated in 1987. It was during her high school years that she recognized music as her calling and did not study further. Instead, she started writing songs, collaborating with Gavin Christopher.

Career Rise

Carey rose to fame in 1990 with her debut album “Vision of Love” which produced four singles that topped all musical charts in USA. After her debut album, she produced many commercially successful albums which helped her establish herself as the highest selling musical act for Columbia Records. In 1995–96, Carey and the R&B group Boyz II Men created musical history by spending a record sixteen weeks with a top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for their hit single “One Sweet Day”, which still remains America’s longest-running, number-one song. In 1997, Carey moved to hip hop with the release of her album Butterfly. In 2000, Carey was signed by Virgin Records America for a $100 million recording contract, but following health issues her career saw a decline for a few years. She made her comeback, making her way back to the top of all musical charts in 2005 with ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’, making it America’s best-selling album and the second-best selling album across the globe. Carey dated and later married Tommy Mottola, an American music executive on 5 June 1993, but their relationship suffered due to constant creative differences in their musical collaborations and due to his controlling nature. She divorced him in 1998 and started seeing singer Luis Miguel. The relationship lasted for three years from 1998 to 2001.

Carey married actor, comedian Nick Cannon on April 30, 2008 in The Bahamas. Together the couple have two children, fraternal twins Monroe and Moroccon, whom she delivered via Caesarean section, also on April 30, 2011. The couple divorced in 2016. On January 2016, Mariah Carey began dating billionaire James Packer only to split with him in October, the same year.
