Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York to Patricia Hickey and Alfred Roy Carey. While her father is of Afro-Venezuelan and African American descent, her mother is Irish. The family’s last name Carey was adopted by her grandfather when the immigrated to USA. She has an older sister named Alison and a brother named Morgan. Her parents divorced when she was three years old.
Carey attended Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York where she first tried her hand at song-writing and melodies. She graduated in 1987.
