Heo Sung-tae is a South Korean actor who got international fame after his stint as the villain Deok-su in the popular Netflix show ‘Squid Game’. Heo Sung-tae was born in Busan in South Korea on October 1977. He knows Russian very well, as he majored in the language at the Pusan National University.

Career Rise
Heo Sung-tae started his acting career at age 35. Previously, he was a corporate employee first as a part of overseas marketing team for LG, and then in the shipbuilding company, Daewoo Shipping and Marine Co.
Drinking was weirdly beneficial to Heo’s career because he signed up for the audition of the SBS talent show ‘Miraculous Audition’, in a drunken stupor.
He became well-known in Korea for his role of Ha Il-soo in the 2016 thriller, The Age of Shadows’. He did in about 60 films and shows before he was approached for Squid Game.

Heo Sung-tae’s role as a menacing character drew eyeballs and 1 million plus followers on Instagram. His passionate on-screen scene with fellow-actress Kim Joo-ryoung had viewers sending him messages like ‘take me to the washroom’ embarrassing the shy Heo.
Heo Sung tae say that he had to gain a lot of weight, pile on 15 kilos for his role as the hardened criminal role of Deok-su. Being scrawny by nature, it was tough for him to add 15 kilos in one month. He adds, “Following COVID, I lost on 5 projects and then I was approached for Squid Game. The director asked me to add weight quickly. I did so but then I ended up with a lot of health problems, my knees hurt and my calf tore. It was really tough and painful for me to shoot the tug of war scene..”
Heo Sung says that his wife had asked him not do any sex scene but he had to make an exception for the Squid Game.
