Shawn Peter Raul Mendes is a Canadian songwriter and singer. In 20113, he posted song covers on video-sharing app Vine and soon got lots of followers. He was then sought out by Andrew Gertler, an artist manager, who took him to Island Records. Shawn subsequently signed a deal with the label.

In July 2014, Shawn released an EP. In 2015, he launched ‘Handwritten’ his debut studio album. It debuted on top of the US Billboard 200 and catapulted him as one of the 5 singer/musicians to debut at number 1 before turning 18 years old. The single ‘Stitches’, from that album reached top 10 in the US and Canada and number 1 in the UK. Mendes released his second studio album ‘Illuminate’ in 2016. It also debuted top of the US Billboard 200 charts.

Mendes was featured in the list of ‘100 most influential people in the world’ by Time magazine in 2018. He has been on 3 headline concert tours, namely, ShawnsFirstHeadlines, Illuminate World Tour, and Shawn Mendes World Tour.

Early Life and Education

Mendes was born on 8th August, 1998, in Toronto, Ontario to an English mother and a Portuguese father. His mother Karen is a real estate agent and his father Manuel Mendes is a businessman, engaged in sales of restaurant and bar supplies in the city of Toronto.

Mendes grew up in Pickering, Ontario. He has one younger sister. He went to the Pine Ridge Secondary School.

How Shawn Mendes was discovered

In 2012, when he was 13 years old, Shawn watched tutorial videos on YouTube and taught himself how to play the guitar. A year later, he began posting cover song videos in Vine application and on YouTube, and  soon got millions of followers.

When manager Andrew Gertler who was scouting for fresh talent came across Shawn Mendes’ rendering of  ‘ A Great Big World’ and ‘Say Something’, he began to look for the young singer’s contact information.  The hunt was not that easy; but somehow the manager got the email address of Shawn’s mother and said that he would like to manage her son’s career, becuase he felt that he had incredible musical talent.  Thus began a fruitful relationship between Gertler and Mendes, who are now as good as business partners.

By August 2014, Mendes was among the top 3  musicians on Vine.  Gertler brought him to Island Records in January 2014, and was signed on in May 2014.

Career

Mendes became the 3rd most followed artist on the app by Aug 2014. During this period, Mendes toured with the Magcon Tour as a member. Other young Viners with large social media following were also on this tour. He then went as an opening act for Austin Mahone’s nationwide tour. He also released his debut EP which reached number 5 on the Billboard 200.

Mendes launched ‘Life of the Party’, his first single, in June 2014, which made it to number 24 in the US Billboard Hot 100. He thus became the youngest artist to debut in the top 25 of the chart.

Mendes released his first full-length studio album ‘Handwritten’ in April 2015 and it was certified platinum. The same year, he opened for Taylor Swift in North America during her World Tour; collaborated with Camila Cabello and released the single ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’

Shawn made his debut as an actor in Jan 2016 during the 3rd season premiere episode of the show ‘The 100’ telecast on The CW. He also signed with Wilhelmina Models modeling agency. He then went on the Shawn Mendes World Tour, beginning March 2016. The Europe and North American shows were sold out in minutes.

In June 2016, Mendes released the lead single from his second album Illuminate. Titled ‘Treat You Better,’ the single breached the top 10 mark on the UK Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 and got certified triple platinum. The second album was released in Sep 2016 and got certified platinum. In Dec 2016, he launched ‘Live at Madison Square Garden’ a live album.

Shawn went on to sell out the ‘Illuminate World Tour’ in April 2017. In March 2018, he released the lead single ‘In My Blood’ of his third upcoming self-titled album and then the 2nd single ‘Lost in Japan.’ The album  released in May 2018. Mendes will go on the self-titled tour to promote his third album in 2019.

  • Mendes is currently not in any relationship nor is he dating anyone. He has stated that he is single. It was rumored that in the past he was dating Bethany Mota, Lauren Giraldo, and Camila Cabello.
  • He has anxiety disorder and is taking therapy for it.
  • He has received many nominations and awards, including 4 iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards, 8 MTV Europe Music Awards, 3 Juno Awards, 1 American Music Award, and Canada’s Walk of Fame Allan Slaight Honour. He got People’s Choice Award for Favorite Breakout Artist in 2016.
  • Mendes supports different charitable organizations. He launched ‘Notes from Shawn’ campaign in collaboration with DoSomething.org to help address issues like depression and low self-esteem and increase self-harm awareness. After the 2017 Mexico City earthquake, he worked with the American Red Cross and created the ‘Mexico Earthquake Relief Fund.’ He also donated $100,000 to it. He has collaborated with Pencils of Promise and helped raise $25,000 for building a school in Ghana.
