Julianna Margulies is an award-winning American actress and producer. She is best known for her starring and lead roles in the TV shows ER and The Good Wife, respectively.

In December 2020, Margulies announced that she will be joining Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon in the Apple series ‘The Morning Show’ in its second season. She will portray the role of a UBA news anchor, Laura Peterson.

Early Life and Education

Julianna was born on June 8, 1966 in Spring Valley, New York. Paul Margulies, her father, was an advertising executive at Madison Avenue and a writer and philosopher. Francesca, her mother, was a teacher of eurythmy and a ballet dancer. She has two sisters and she is the youngest.

Both her parents were Jewish and their ancestors were immigrants from Austria, Romania, Russia, and Hungary. When Margulies was a kid, her mother converted to Christianity. Before her birth, her family lived in Israel for a short period before relocating to the Upper West Side of NYC. As a kid, she had lived in France, New York, and England.

Julianna went to Green Meadow Waldorf School for grade school and graduated high school from High Mowing School. She then attended Sarah Lawrence College, where she took park in campus plays.

Career

Margulies began her acting career with a small role as a prostitute in the 1991 Steven Seagal starrer ‘Out for Justice’.

After a few minor roles in varied TV series, she landed a starring role as Nurse Carol Hathaway in the hit NBC series ER. Even though the show ran till 2009, she was a part of the show from 1994 till she left in 2000, for 6 seasons. In 1994, she won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Primetime Emmy Award. She was nominated for the next 5 seasons as well. She is the only regular cast member of ER to have won an Emmy.

After ER, Julianna worked on screen and stage. In theater, she acted in ‘Intrigue With Faye’ produced by MCC Theater, The Vagina Monologues, and ‘Ten Unknowns’ produced by Lincoln Center.

In 2009, she was offered the main role of ‘Alicia Florrick’ in the legal drama series ‘The Good Wife’ telecast on CBS. The show was commercially and critically successful. She won a Golden Globe Award, 2 Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series Primetime Emmy Awards, and 1 Television Critics Association Award for her role.

In 2020, Margulies played the recurring role of Catherine Brant in the Showtime drama series ‘Billions’. Her acting credits in movies include Ghost Ship, Evelyn, Snakes on a Plane, Stand Up Guys, City Island, and The Upside. She also featured in the miniseries ‘The Mists of Avalon’ and the ‘The Hot Zone’, and voiced the character of Neera in animated film Dinosaur.
