Rapid advancement in medicine and health over the past decades resulted in a declining death rate. The birth rates did not fall down, but have plateaued in most developed countries. It is during this time of population explosion, globalization, and an unforeseen pandemic that we may want some trivia about the rapid growth of human population on the planet.

Listed below are the top 5 women/couples who have had the most number of children.

  • Valentina, with 69 children

She was the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev, a peasant/farmer from Shuya in Russia. From 1725 to 1765, Valentina gave birth to 7 sets of triplets, 16 pairs of twins, and 4 sets of quadruplets for a total of 69 children in 27 deliveries/births. It is said that 67 of the 69 children survived infancy. She and her husband hold the record for a couple with the most children. However, as proper records were not maintained in Russia in the 1700s, this record is disputed.

It is also claimed that Feodor had 18 children (6 pairs of twins, and 2 sets of triplets) with his second wife. Thus, he was father to 87 kids.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Gravata, with 62 children

Gravata was a woman from Tuscany, Italy, who gave birth to 62 children in the early 1900s. Her case is known as the Gravata medical case.

Gravata was a twin daughter of a couple, one of whom was a triplet. Her first kid was a girl. In her second pregnancy she gave birth to 6 sons and another 5 sons in her third. Then she had 2 sets of triplets and 1 set of quadruplets. The 36 children that ensued were either single or twin baby girls. In the final 4 pregnancies, she delivered boys.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Yakov Kirillov, with 57 children

Yakov Kirillov was a peasant from Vvedensky village in Russia in the 1700s. His first wife gave birth to 57 children in total, in 21 pregnancies. She gave birth to 10 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets. Yakov was 60 years old in 1755 when he had appeared in court. It is said that his children were alive at that time. However, this record from Russia is also disputed.

  • Adam and Barbara Stratzmann, with 53 children

Folklore has it that Barbara Stratzmann was born in 1448 in Bönnigheim, Germany and passed away in 1503. It is claimed that by 1498 she had given birth to 53 kids in 29 pregnancies. She had 5 pairs of twins, 4 sets of triplets, 1 set of sextuplets, and 1 set of septuplets. In 1498, the oldest surviving child was 8 years old. This record has also been questioned and disputed.

  • Maddalena Granata, with 52 children

Maddalena Granata was born in Nocera city in Italy in 1839. She married when she was 28 years old and by 1886 had given birth to 52 live and stillbirth kids, 49 of which were boys. According to Dr. de Sanctis from the city of Nocera, she had given birth to fifteen sets of triplets.
