Sir Thomas Sean Connery is a famous Scottish actor and producer who is best known as the first ever suave agent 007 James Bond, a role he portrayed from 1962 to 1983. He has starred as Bond in 7 films beginning with ‘Dr. No’ in 1962. Apart from his work in the Bond films, Connery appeared in several successful films including ‘Marnie’, ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’, ‘The Hunt for Red October’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’, ‘Highlander’, Dragonheart’,’Murder on the Orient Express’, and ‘The Rock’.

Early Life and Education

Connery was born on 25 August 1930 in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland as the elder son of truck driver Joseph Connery and his wife Euphemia McBain, who served as a cleaning lady. He was raised in a poor family in a rough neighbourhood along with his only sibling, a younger brother named Neil Connery. Connery, who had a muscular built was known as ‘Big Tam’ in the neighbourhood where he used to play football.

Connery completed his elementary education from Tollcross Elementary School where he excelled at Mathematics and developed an interest in reading but had to quit school by the time he was 13, to support his family financially. As such he did several odd jobs such as that of a milkman, truck driver, lifeguard, labourer and coffin polisher. He also enlisted and served into the Riyal Navy but was discharged after three years of service on medical grounds.

Career Rise

Connery participated in the Mr. Universe contest in London, at 23 years of age. While in London, Connery auditioned for a stage production of the play ‘South Pacific’. Connery’s audition proved successful and landed him a role in the play. While performing the play at the Manchester Opera House, Connery became friends with American actor and director Robert Henderson who helped him get parts in London’s Maida Vale Theatre. Connery debuted in 1954 in a short role in ‘Lilacs in the Spring’. Connery’s early films include ‘Hell Drivers’, ‘Action of the Tiger’, ‘Darby O’Gill and the Little People’, ‘Another Time, Another Place’, ‘The Frightened City’ etc in which he mainly appeared in supporting roles.

Connery received the biggest role of his career so far in 1961, when he was cast as in the titular role of ‘Macbeth’ based on the tragedy by William Shakespeare, but his luck turned in 1962 when he was cast as the suave spy James Bond. He starred in 7 Bond movies inlcuding ‘Dr. No’ which marked his debut as Bond, followed by ‘From Russia with Love’, ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Thunderball’, ‘You Only Live Twice’, ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ and ‘Never Say Never Again’. Connerry also appeared inn other commercial hit films including ‘Marnie’, ‘The Hill’, ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, ‘The Untouchables’, and ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’. Connery served as producer and executive producer in the later years of his career and appeared in films like ‘First Knight’, ‘The Rock’, ‘The Avengers’, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ until he retired in 2012, making his final appearance in the titular voice role of ‘Sir Billi’.
