Jerry Seinfeld – Laughing all the way to the Bank




Jerome Allen “Jerry” Seinfeld is a famous American comedian and actor who rose to international acclaim for his portrayal of ‘Seinfeld’, a fictionalized version of himself in the sitcom ‘Seinfeld’ which aired on the NBC network from 1989 to 1998, running for 9 years. Regarded as one of the most famous comedians of the current era, Seinfeld was listed on the 12th position in Comedy Central’s list of “Greatest Stand-up Comedian of All Time” in 2005.

Seinfeld is also a writer, producer and director and served as the director of the Broadway show titled ‘Long Story Short’ featuring Colin Quinn. He also served as a voice artiste and script-writer of the aminated comedy film ‘Bee Movie’. Seinfeld has appeared as himself on several TV shows which feature his comedian colleagues in the lead role such as ‘The Larry Sanders Show’, ‘Louie’, ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ and ‘The Jim Gaffigan Show’ etc.

Early Life and Education

Seinfeld was born 29 April 1954 in Brooklyn, New York City as the son of World War II veteran Kalman Seinfeld who collected jokes and home-maker Betty Hosni. He was raised Massapequa, New York along with his only sibling, an older sister named Carolyn Liebling. Seinfeld has Austrian Jewish ancestry on his father’s side of the family and Syrian Jewish on his mother’s side, with him maternal grandparents immigrating to USA form Aleppo, Syria.

Seinfeld attended the Massapequa High School, Long Island from where he graduated and enrolled into State University of New York at Oswego. After completing two years at the university, Seinfeld transferred to Queens College, City University of New York from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre and communications.

 

Career Rise

Seinfeld began his career working with the ‘Catch a Rising Star’ comedy club in New York City after which he made his debut TV appearance on HBO’s Rodney Dangerfield special.  He then appeared in the recurring role of Frankie in the ABC series ‘Benson’. Seinfeld’s appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ in 1981 contributed to his rise in fame as he was called to appear on the show regularly, even appearing on ‘Late Night with David Letterman’. Seinfeld created ‘The Seinfeld Chronicles’ for NBC network along with Larry David in 1988, which was later renamed ‘Seinfeld’. The show went on to become one of the most popular sitcoms on US television. The show lasted for 9 seasons with a total of 180 episodes.

  

In 1993, Seinfeld published the book ‘Seinlanguage’ which earned great critical reviews and became a New York Times Best Seller. He appeared as himself on shows like ‘The Larry Sanders Show’, ‘NewsRadio’, ’30 Rock’, ‘Mad About You’, ‘Louie’ etc. He also appeared in a recurring role as himself on six episodes of the show ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’. In 2004, Seinfeld promoted a series of short film commercials called ‘The Adventures of Seinfeld & Superman’. She co-wrote the script for and lent his voice to the character of Barry B. Benson in the animated comedy film ‘Bee Movie’. In 2012, Seinfeld created the web-series talk show ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’ of which he also serves as host and director. He has made several episodes appearances as himself on shows by comedians like ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ and ‘The Jim Gaffigan Show’, and appeared in the 2017 Stand-up special ‘Jerry Before Seinfeld’.

Personal Life

Before becoming a national phenomenon with ‘Seinfeld’, the 1.81 meter Seinfeld was in a romantic relationship with fellow comedian Carol Leifer who inpired the character of Elaine on his show. The couple got engaged in 1984 but broke off soon after. He was then involved in a 4-year relationship with Shoshanna Lonstein, then 17- years old, when he himself was in his late 30s.

Seinfeld met his eventual wife Tommy Hilfiger public relations executive Jessica Sklar in August 1998. Sklar’s relationship with her then husband theatre scion Eric Nederlander ended in divorce within a year and she married Seinfeld in December 1999. The couple are parents to three children together, a daughter named Sacha and sons named Julian Kal and Shepherd Kellen.

Seinfeld owns a Tudor style waterfront manor in the lavish East Hampton area of New York that is spread over a 14-acre property worth $32 Million. The estate features 3 buildings comprising of a total of 24 rooms, 8 full bathrooms and five half baths. Seinfeld’s master bedroom is a 1,500-square foot room featuring a balcony. The estate boasts of thirteen fireplaces, a gourmet kitchen, an indoor and outdoor pool, a bowling alley and a gym, a music room, a wine cellar, a smoking bar, a guest cottage and a garage that can fit 22 cars.

Seinfeld is an avid Porsche enthusiast and loyalist and owns 47 cars of the brand. His favourites are the black Porsche Carrera GT and the silver Porsche 959 coupe among others. Over the years,  his car collection includes Porsche 911s,  and ten Porsche Boxters. He also owns the gray colored Porsche 550 Spyder, the same model actor James Dean was traveling in, when it crashed, resulting in his death.

 

Jets

He also owns a Gulfstream V, the most luxurious and high performing jet which is powered by the Rolls Royce engines and can fly at an altitude of over 50,000 feet above the ground.
