Tyree Crayon was born on March 19, 1968, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Tyree and Dr. Dre are half-brothers through their mother, Verna Young. Verna was once married to Dr. Dre’s father, Theodore Young, but they split up in 1968 and officially divorced in 1972. Verna had three children with Curtis Crayon: sons Jerome and Tyree, and daughter Shamika. Verna Young is an educator who served as a teacher and later as the principal of Bonham Elementary School for nearly nine years.

Tragically, Tyree Crayon was killed in a fight near Crenshaw Avenue in Compton on June 25, 1989, at the age of 21. During the altercation, he was knocked to the ground and sustained traumatic injuries. There is little information about the incident, and it remains unclear if the murder was ever solved. Despite Dr. Dre’s efforts to obtain information from various law enforcement agencies, no records or answers regarding Tyree’s murder have been found. The Compton Police Department, where the incident likely occurred, was disbanded due to corruption and misconduct, complicating the investigation. It seems Tyree’s case may be lost in jurisdictional issues, leaving Dr. Dre without closure.

Dr. Dre has expressed deep grief over the loss of his brother, referring to Tyree as his best friend and an essential part of his life. This sorrow is evident in the lyrics of his song “The Message,” where he conveys his enduring brotherly affection for Tyree.

Tyree Crayon was laid to rest at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
