Chanda Kochhar is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and managing director of ICICI Bank. She is popular for her leadership of the ICICI Group and for her role in fabricating the retail banking sector in India. She is also widely recognized for her contributions to different forums in India and globally. ICICI is today among the top four private banks in India and is one of the prominent financial institutions in the world of retail banking.

Early life and background
She was born on 17th November, 1961, in Jodhpur Rajasthan. Her father, Roopchand Advani, served as the principal of an engineering college in Jaipur. Chanda completed her high school education from St Angela Sophia School, Jaipur. After her father’s death, Chanda and her two siblings were raised in Mumbai by their mother. There she joined the Jai Hind college to study Economics. After completing her graduation in 1982, Chanda studied cost accountancy. Later, Chanda joined Jamnalal Bajaj Management Studies to pursue her MBA with specialization in Finance.
Ms Chanda Kochhar received the J. N. Bose Gold Medal in Cost Accountancy and Wockhardt Gold Medal for Excellence in Management Studies.
Career achievements
In 1984, Chanda joined the ICICI Bank to serve as a management trainee. She started to work on several appraising projects in various industries such as paper, cement and textile.
During the 1990s, Chanda played an essential role in setting up the ICICI bank. In the year 2001, she was selected as one of the Board Directors of the bank.
After that, Kochhar took the responsibility to enhance the nascent retail sector of the bank. She successfully ruled the international and corporate banking business sector during 2006-07.
Chanda worked as the Joint managing director and chief financial officer of ICICI bank from 2007 to 2009.
Currently, Chanda is handling all the operations of the Indian banking sectors as well as overseas. She also serves as the President of the International Monetary Conference.
Chanda Kochhar is also the board member of ICICI bank’s principle subsidiaries. Apart from this, she also serves as a member of India-Japan Business Leader’s Forum and US-India CEO forum. In addition to this, Kochhar is also the board member of various organizations such as National Institute of Securities Markets, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations and Institute of International Finance. Chanda has also been a part of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade & Industry. She served as the Co-chairperson of the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting, in 2011.
Chanda has received countless awards and credit for her vast contribution to the banking sectors of India. In 2011, the Indian government honored her with the “ Padma Bhusan” award. She also achieved the “Banker of the Year” award by Zee Business. She ranked 36th in Forbes list of “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women’’. Chanda featured in the list of the “11 most important women in finance” by The Telegraph (UK). The Carleton University of Canada has conferred upon her an honorary “Doctor of Laws”, in 2014.

Chanda met her husband Deepak Kochhar while studying at Jamnalal Bajaj Management Studies. Currently, her husband serves as a wind energy entrepreneur. The couple is having two kids, Arjun and Aarti. In April 2016, she wrote an open letter to Aarti, which became viral on social media.
