She comes from the 1st family of Bollywood – the Kapoors. Kareena is the grand-daughter of Bollywood’s biggest showman Raj Kapoor and daughter of actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita. She is the younger sister of Karisma Kapoor who was one of the most popular actresses of the 90s. One of Kareena’s cousins is the popular Bollywood actor-star Ranbir Kapoor. She married actor Saif Ali Khan in 2012.
The name ‘Kareena’ was given to her from the book ‘Anna Karenina’, the Leo Tolstoy book that her mother would read, when she was pregnant with her. Kareena Kapoor was supposed to debut opposite Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, which did not work out. She debuted opposite another first-timer Abhishek Bachchan in Refugee (2000). Her first hit was the multi-starrer box-office drama ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001). Though her performances began to get appreciated with every consecutive film, her movies were jinxed at the box office.
The turning point came in the form of Jab We Met (2007) which not only became a big hit, but is also regarded as one of the best love stories ever made in Bollywood.
