Alfredo James “Al” Pacino is a famous American film and stage actor, screenwriter and filmaker best known for his work in ‘The Godfather Trilogy’ films in which he portrayed the character of Michael Corleone. Pacino made his acting debut in 1969 and soon received nationwide prominence for starring in critically and commercially successful films such as ‘Serpico’, ‘Dog Day Afternoon’, ‘…And Justice for All’, ‘Dick Tracy’ ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ and ‘Scent of a Woman’.

During his acting career, spanning more than five decades, Pacino has been felicitated with several awards and nominations, having received 1 Academy award out of eight nominations, 1 BAFTA award out of four nominations, 4 Golden Globe Awards out of 16 nominations, 2 Prime Time Emmy Awards out of 4 nominations and 2 Tony Awards out of 3 nominations.

Early Life and Education

Pacino was born on 25 April 1940 in East Harlem, New York City as the son of Sicilian-American parents, Rose Gerard and Salvatore Pacino and was raised in Bronx, New York. Pacino’s father was raised in San Fratello, Messina and moved to Covina, California, USA where he first served as an insurance salesman and later as a restaurateur. His parents divorced when Pacino was two.

Pacino studied at Herman Ridder Junior High School but during his years in secondary school, dropped out of several classes excluding English. He was then enrolled into the High School of Performing Arts, but soon dropped out from there as well, much to the dismay of his mother, which caused him to leave his home and take low paying jobs. At School, Pacino hung out with friends who did and died of drugs and was seen as a troublemaker.

Career Rise

Pacino debuted on both the Silver screen and Broadway in 1969 with a minor role in ‘Me, Natalie’, a short film and the play ‘Does A Tiger Wear a Necktie?’, respectively and won a Tony for the latter. He gained prominence for his portrayal of Bobby in ‘The Panic in Needle Park’ in 1971, although the movie failed at the box office. Pacino received his breakthrough in 1972 when he appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s Academy Award winning film ‘The Godfather’ in which he portrayed Michael Corleone and soon became a nationwide phenomenon. His next role was in ‘Scarecrow’ where Pacino portrayed Francis Lionel ‘Lion’ Delbuchi and won the Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. Pacino also received his first Academy Award nomination in 1973 for his portrayal of New York City cop Frank Serpico in ‘Serpico’

The 1.7 meter tall Pacino’s next appearance was in the 1974 sequel ‘Godfather: Part II’, which once again won several awards. He earned a second Oscar nomination for his film ‘Dog Day Afternoon’. During the 1980’s Pacino did not appear in any successful films but made a comeback in 1990 with ‘The Godfather, Part III’, earning a Golden Globe nomination. He appeared in several successful films throughout the decade including ‘Frankie and Johnny’, ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’, ‘Heat’, ‘Donnie Brasco’, ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ etc and even won his first Oscar for Best actor for his performance in ‘Scent of a Woman ‘ in 1992. His later appearances include the films ‘Chinese Coffee’, which he also directed, and the hit films ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’.

Personal Life

Pacino was in a relationship with Jan Tarrant, an acting coach with whom he has a daughter named Julie Marie, born in 1989. He then entered a relationship with actress Beverly D’Angelo and fathered twin children, a son named Anton James and a daughter named Olivia Rose with her. Pacino’s relationship with D’Angelo lasted from 1996 to 2003.

Pacino was also romantically involved with actress Diane Keaton for several years in an on-again, off-again relationship until they finally broke up while filming ‘The Godfather Part II’. He was also involved with Jill Clayburgh, Tuesday Weld, Kathleen Quinlan, Marthe Keller, and Lyndall Hobbs. Pacino has never been married.

Al Pacino is in a relationship with Lucila Sola, 38 (as on 2018). There is a 39 year old age difference between them, though it hardly mattes for the much-in-love couple.  The two have been in a relationship for almost a decade.  The actor has three kids from his ex-girlfriends, as aforementioned.
