Tim Kaine, an American politician and attorney, is the junior United States Senator from Virginia.  As a member of the Democratic Party, he got selected to the senate in the year 2012. He is also a presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party for the Vice President of the US in the election of 2016.

Early life and background

He was born on February 26 in the year 1958 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Albert Alexander Kaine Jr, the owner of a small iron working shop and a welder and to Mary Kathleen (née Burns), a home economics teacher.  Kaine is the eldest amongst the three siblings. The entire family shifted to Overland Park, Kansas when  Kaine was very young.

Tim received his high school education from the Rockhurst High School where he used to take part in various debates. Due to his talent and knowledge, Kaine was also elected as the student body president.

After completing his high school education, Kaine enrolled in the University of Missouri in the year 1979. After three years, he graduated from the university with B.A. in Economics.  During the year of 1978, Kaine used to work as the Coro Foundation fellow in Kansas City. Later, he attended Harvard Law School.  During the breaks he used to work with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Honduras. He worked there for nine consecutive months while helping the Jesuit missionaries. Kaine also used to run a vocational center which taught welding and carpentry. He contributed a lot to the enrollment of the center by recruiting the villagers.  The years of hard work in Honduras garnered him with fluency in the Spanish language.

Career highlights

After earning his degree from the law school, Kaine started working as a law clerk to Judge R. Lanier Anderson III of the U.S Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, in Georgia. After that, he joined the Richmond law firm of Parsley & Cluverius, Little. He specialized in fair housing law while practicing in Richmond for 17 years.  In 1987, he started working as a director with the law firm of Mezzullo & McCandlish. He was involved with the Virginia chapter of Housing Opportunities Made Equal as a broad member.

In the year 1988, Kaine  began working as an adjunct professor at the University Of Richmond School Of Law where he used to teach legal ethics. He worked at the university for six consecutive years.

Kaine was elected to the city council of the independent city of Richmond in 1994. Four years down the line, in 1998, he was elected as the mayor of Richmond. Kaine was chosen by a majority-oriented black city Council as the city’s first white mayor in more than ten years.

In 2001, Kaine ran for the lieutenant governor of Virginia. Four years later, he applied for the position of governor of Virginia against Jerry W. Kilgore and won. From 2008 to 2009, he also served as the chairman of the Southern Governors Association. Kaine became the first governor who endorsed Barrack Obama for the election of the president. In 2006, he signed an order to claim the banning of smoking in all government buildings.

Kaine became the Chair of the Democratic National Committee in the year 2009 and worked there till 2011. He won the seat of the United States Senate in 2012. On 22nd July in 2016, Kaine got selected for the running mate of Hillary Clinton for the election of president.

Tim Kaine and Hillary Clinton share a professional equations, he had actively endorsed her in seven states during the primaries campaign.  He was considered to be on the top list of people as a running mate for Clinton along with the likes of Julian Castro and Elizabeth Warren. He is the first person from Virginia to get the major party’s ticket sine Woodrow Wilson. He is also the first person from Virginia to run for Vice President ever since John Tyler, back in 1840.

Kaine tied the knot with Anne Bright Holton, the daughter of ex Virginia governor, A. Linwood Holton, Jr.in the year 1984. They met each other while studying at Harvard Law School. The couple is blessed with three children named Woody, Annella and Nat.
